Everyone has trouble with their memory every now and again. Forgetting to turn the oven off, or misplacing your keys; these are things that happen everyday. But sometimes, especially as we age, this forgetful behavior starts to get worse and becomes more of a problem. Diseases such as Alzheimer’s affects the brain which in turn causes things such as memory loss and impairment. However it appears that new studies would suggest that maybe the key to helping these issues could be something that is already found in the human body; specifically, or more aptly more notably, in the female body.

Estrogen is a hormone found in both men and women but is more often noted as being the “female hormone” because of its abundance in women and its role in providing more of the female characteristics seen in them. It is also apparently a hormone that could aid in helping people with their memory problems. A Scientist from Berkeley, who specializes in neuroscience, conducted a study in which 24 healthy women were tested on their memory during and before their menstrual cycle. This is because during a woman’s menstrual cycle ovulation occurs which increases the levels of estrogen. It was found that the women scored higher on memory tests when their estrogen levels were higher. Based on this it would seem that estrogen is the key to better memory.

It has actually been so promising that there are studies which would suggest that estrogen replacement therapy would be useful in helping treat patients with Alzhiemer’s.  Thus far no major break through has been made in the field but studies continue. However, all these studies have only really focused on women. How would increased levels of this hormone effect men? Would it even help with their memory lose? What could the adverse effects be if they were to participate in this treatment? Food for thought.
