The Gift of Music
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Some may argue it may be even more important. The way I see it, no matter what you look like on the outside, your status, or position in life, none of that really matters if your mind is messed up. None of that matters if you have a negative attitude or your thoughts are in a dark place. You have to take care of your mind.
Obviously, there are a plethora of ways to help yourself. You can find tips, tricks, hacks, home remedies, or ideas on having a better mindset almost everywhere. But to me, there is no better way to take care of your mental health other than simply knowing yourself and what works best for you. I wanted to share with you the best thing that helps me get through my downs. I want to share with you the best medicine. The thing that tops any yoga move or prescription out there. And that is music.
Music always has been and always will be one of the greatest things on Earth, to a majority of people. All throughout history, music has been used as a tool to touch the human soul. To hit your emotions in a way that nothing else does. To send chills down your spine and make all your hairs stand up. It brings people together. It helps you get through bad days because you know there’s at least one person in the world who understands you. That is what I’ve always found so beautiful about music. No matter what mood I’m in or what is going on in my life, there is a song, an artist, or a genre that gets me. There is always something to listen to that I can connect with.
I don’t believe in people having bad taste when it comes to their playlists. Who are we to tell anyone that the songs that make their hearts beat fast, make them smile, or make them reminisce, are bad? Every song in my playlist has one thought, one moment, or one memory attached to it. And that is the reason music is such a gift to me. They’re connections I’ve made, and those connections have gotten me through a lot.
Everyone has a passion. There are dancers, painters, scientists, readers, writers, and the list goes on. I don’t dare bash on anyone’s loves and passions, but I believe music is everyone’s passion in one way or another. Screamo bands make you feel like you can fly? Fantastic. Country blues make you remember those summer nights with your loved ones? Beautiful. R&B makes you want to take a road trip with the love of your life? Good.
Music makes everything make sense. Music heals you, recognizes your weaknesses, and pays attention to your pain. It resonates, and it empathizes. Those artists and their stories are the same as someone out there. They’ve been through it and they’ve created such beautiful art to let listeners know they aren’t alone, and they aren’t broken. Music tells us to let go, to move on, to be okay, and to live everyday feeling good and being alive. There are better times coming. There is light in darkness.
Whether you listen to the melody, the beat, or the lyrics. Whether you write it, compose it, or sing it, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the way it makes you feel on the inside. What matters is allowing such a strong entity, such a strong art, to take over your emotions. Allow it to let you feel what you are feeling, and get through it. I have a lot of people in my life that I can talk to and go to when I need a hand or a listening ear. But nothing is ever there for me the way music is. Nothing knows my secrets and my fears the way music does. And that is, and will forever be, the biggest blessing in my life.
